Ammonite · Cross-Section & Polish

Cut Ammonite

A cross-sectioned and polished ammonite that lays its internal architecture open to view — a spiralling series of chambers (camerae) separated by wavy suture lines, several once-hollow compartments now filled with sparkling calcite crystal that formed slowly after burial.

The wavy suture lines where the chamber walls met the outer shell grew more intricate over millions of years of ammonite evolution — from simple gentle curves in the earliest species to the frilled, almost fractal patterns seen here — so distinctive that palaeontologists can often date an ammonite fossil just by reading its suture pattern.

Sourced from Madagascar — one of the world's most significant sources of fossil ammonites, with rich marine deposits concentrated in the island's northwest.
